336 Walcott Street Coolbinia
Built circa 1966, 336 Walcott Street is synonymous with the efficient and functional design Krantz and Sheldon were known for. This intimate building comprises just 9 residential apartments and 1 commercial space fronting Walcott Street – the presence of which sets the agenda of this 1960’s building.
Krantz and Sheldon were perhaps in many ways ahead of their time in terms of realising the value of sustainable design and construction. There was no excess, no waste of space and they firmly believed in good planning and rigorous detailing.
This is like going back to the future where sustainability principles are concerned.
Abraham (Harold) Krantz OAM (1906 – 1999) is said to have had an “emphasis on reducing each dwelling unit to a minimum, achieved by tight planning rather than smaller spaces; conventional construction combined with rigorous detailing to maximise structural strength of building materials and minimise waste; and the bulk ordering of standard building materials, fixtures and fittings to achieve economies of scale.”
In 1999, Harold Krantz was named Citizen of the Year by the City of Perth and was in the same year elevated to Life Fellow of the Royal Australian Institute of Architects. He was also an active patron of the arts. Harold was awarded a prestigious Order of Australia Medal in 1999 for his service to architecture and the performing arts in Perth.
Other notable Krantz and Sheldon works include: The Avenue, Nedlands (Residence), Nedlands Tennis Club (Club House), The Playhouse Theatre (Pier Street, Perth).
